Mogwai - 1999 01 22 Arts Center, Colchester, UK Show note: Sound is pretty muffled. I am guessing the show is incomplete, but the review (below) Show review: review, by daniel lewry http://www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/gig220199.php Lovely venue. A converted old Church in Church Street with TWO BARS = NO QUEUES for beer. The only disavantage was the outside loo's, which everybody even the band had to use and complained about. Temp was 1 degree C. The stage was only about 2 foot of the ground so the wee Scots were different to observe from the back of the hall, but the sound was good and could be heard at the back of the hall !!! Why and How do churches have such great acoustics ?? Bob Tilton supported. Haven't never seen or heard them before I was quite impressed by the no nonsense approach and well structrured toons. It would appear they didn't disappoint on Saturday either but I missed them. mogwai opened as on Saturday with the New track Happiness. Same xmas lights, same keyboard skills from 'Hobbit' (real name I forget - Sorry, no offence i hope.) The track has an airiness about it that makes it a good opening base for the band to build upon. Cody (aka Country) was aired swiftly afterwards. Stewart's vocals took a while to reach the clarity needed, and the confidence of say the Peel version but its slowness and lack of volume seemed to cause some of the audience to lose interest and wander off into their own worlds. This caused a great deal of annoyance to the band and quite rightly so. At the end of the track Stewart asked the crowd 'Please keep the noise down, these tracks are hard enough to get right and we need to concentrate. Thanks to which a few people didn't seem to take to well to. The predominately 'artsy' crowd then listened intently to Ithicha and Helicon pt 1 before some mindlist idio ts and wankers at the front began talking and jumping about again. At this point an irrate Scots lead guitarist stepped aside from the mike and quite bluntly told them to shut the fuck up or piss off. AND I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE. The crowd seemed mainly made up of people there because it was the 'Arts Centre' or because they had heard 'Like Herod' and 'Fear Satan' and expected that all the way through. Don't get me wrong, I want as many people as poss. to hear the band and appreciate the music but a few mindless idiots spoil it for everyone - as it proved in the end. To further infuriate the band, and the middle section of the crowd, one of the 'locals'- tall git short hair You Know Who You Are - then got on his mates back and jumped around, gesturing to the band and annoying the hell out of everyone around them. Other new tracks included Xmas Steps (new version) with violin overtures. 'Hobbits' contributions to several tracks gave them a new perspective and lighter feel that almost re-invents them. I'm really looking forward to the new, breezier album - 'Come On Die Young' to see what other melodical delights are instore for the listener. They played Helicon part 2 and dived into a blistering Like Herod, possibly better than Saturdays (sorry but it's true) and left, stage right never to return... The set list had them down to play an encore of Rollerball and ..Satan but following the antics of some complete wankers at the front understandably the band didn't felt we deserved an encore. Quite rightly to. Too many bands I feel play encores purely because it's part of the package rather than because they deserve too.
