Lowell George Live at WHFS Studio on 1974-03-19

description
Lowell George, Linda Ronstadt & Friends Paul Kraft, John Starling & Sue Starling WHFS Studio  Bethesda, Maryland, USA March 19, 1974  FM Goody/grner1 Speed/Pitch-adjusted Reconstructed Edition, v.3 Original seeder's notes (updated): Here's an interesting recording of well-known Washington DC DJ Don "Cerphe" Colwell with Lowell George and a giggly Linda Ronstadt. I have traded for at least 3 different versions of this over the years. The last 16 minutes was recently seeded from an off-air master in better quality so I merged it with my best previous source to make this version that now totals 39:15. All released tracks aired during the broadcast (from studio LP's by Little Feat, Van Dyke Parks & The Kingsmen) have been deleted to make this "torrent-friendly". This material has been posted before on Dime and elsewhere in various forms, but I think that my source for the first 24 minutes is different from those previous postings (transferred from a Dat tape that I traded for many years ago). The sound quality is quite decent and often great - please check the samples to get an idea of the quality... Source 1: unknown lineage Dat tape > Panasonic SV-3700 (S/PDIF coax/RCA output) Source 2 [from 3:16 track 9 to end of recording]: WHFS-FM off-air cassette master [Mark Tryon] / Transfer: EAC > Flac (Dub Irie 2007-03-19) > Macintosh with Digidesign Mbox > Pro Tools [normalization & tracking; clicks repaired or reduced] > AIFF files > xACT (Flac level 8 files with sector boundaries verified) > Goody's additional lineage: TLH (WAV) > iZotope RX8 Advanced (hum reduction - tracks 01-09) > Audition (Pitch Bender, various amounts; EQ and level adjustments - tracks 01-09; some editing of previous Tracks 06, 08, 12 & 13 to smooth transitions to alternate sources) > TLH (FLAC Level 8; Align Sector Boundaries; .ffp) > foobar2000 (tags) Original lineage for Tracks 07, 11 & 13: FM soundboard, some radio static > 1st generation tape > equalizer > Cd > wav > flac > Goody's additional lineage: TLH (WAV) > Audition (Pitch Bender -33 cents; Big clicks/pops reduced; Channels balanced) 01 [1:00] Talk with hellos from Lowell & Linda & talk about the studio amplifier that was used on the original recording of Louie Louie by the Kingsmen 02 [0:20] WHFS promo by Sam Clayton and Paul Barrere of Little Feat 03 [2:14] Talk with Linda about being sick the last time she'd played at Lisner Auditorium in Washington DC 04 [3:48] China White [Lowell George solo] 05 [5:16] Talk about guitars & Lowell's childhood musical upbringing 06 [4:55] Talk about Stone Poneys, Van Dyke Parks, etc. 07 [2:10] Sailin' Shoes [Lowell & Linda duet] 08 [0:34] Talk - DJ intro to Little Feat "On Your Way Down" (song deleted) 09 [3:48] Talk about Trinidad, Van Dyke Parks, Lowell playing with Frank Zappa, Roy Estrada, etc. 10 [2:05] Talk - intro of Friends Paul Kraft, John Starling & Sue Starling plus tuning for "Willin'" and WHFS station ID 11 [2:42] Willin' [Lowell with Linda & Friends]  12 [0:20] Talk including Linda's comment that she's "never had this much fun at a radio show before" 13 [2:00] Heartache [Lowell & Linda]  14 [1:18] Talk - deciding which Van Dyke Parks songs to play, etc.   15 [1:38] Talk - Lowell to fly home the following day, etc. 16 [0:31] Talk (with a bit of "Louie Louie") 17 [4:29] Talk about "Louie Louie" and show conclusion --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Runtime: 39:08 Goody's notes for this new edition: I've previously shared two separate remasters - one being the original "complete reconstruction", the other - a three-track edition which only included only the songs Sailin' Shoes, Willin' and Heartache from a different alternate source with superior audio. Since the time of those previous shares and reseeds (which you may still find circulating here and there), I've worked out some edits to the original files to accommodate a smooth transition between the two sets. Granted, the sound changes considerably in order to facilitate the upgraded audio tracks but it's only noticed momentarily, imho. In addition, I've vastly reworked much of the original presentation to greatly reduce an inherent hum that existed in original Tracks 01-09 to which I then added a bit of EQ to further enhance the audio overall of those tracks in order to bring more clarity to the audio which was originally rather dull and muddy. Now you have the sonic best of these three worlds. Many thanks are due to those named and not named here who provided these sources long ago and, of course, especially to those who appear on these fine tracks you're listening to. Our thanks also to ethiessen1 for his fine work compiling some historic photos to incorporate into new cover art as well as for his help putting together the additional info in this text! grner1's additional notes: Many radio transmission clicks were removed manually. Some minor problem spots that could not be repaired seamlessly remain, but it's way better than before.   Enjoy and SHARE! Please keep this file set intact, and if converting to lossy files for some reason please don't place those into circulation. Text for this edition updated - August 11, 2021
