This was a very strange and cool place all at the same time. After having a night off from Keith playing we were both ready to rock again. Well, it was a "sorta" night off. The Dean Ween Group played the night before in Blue Lake, CA at another casino by the same name. The difference was this time the DWG was the opening act for the great George Clinton and P-Funk. Keith and I were invited along for the ride, and Keith ended up sitting in with Dean Ween Group that night during "Mercedes Benz". This was something that had been happening every show since the first tour. So this gig in Nevada was business as usual and a very beautiful ride through the mountains. The room was huge. It was half ballroom aka: The Crown Room in front, and half casino in back. There was a semi-wall that divided the 2 rooms. The whole room including the Crown Room and the casino was huge and cavernous with a very high ceiling. It looked like it was a converted warehouse. The Crown Room was decorated nicely with multi-colored light trees placed all over the dance floor. These were actual growing trees right in the middle of the room. It was pretty cool. The soundboard was right in the middle of the dividing wall. It was a very strange spot, but it fit with the way the room was laid out and the overall vibe. You could say it was somewhat hidden but really not so much. There was a weird echo in that sound booth as you can imagine. That being said, the staff was incredibly accommodating on every level, and the house sound man was super cool. He took every direction I gave him with my pointers on Keith's sound. It really shows on this recording. The sound is pristine. I did not have to do a whole lot in the mixdown. The recording is about 90% Soundboard and 10% Audience mix. The mics were set up on a stand back at the soundboard next to the sound booth/wall. So not much they can really contribute sonically other than the overall room sound and casino game sounds. The crowd was psyched to rock and reacted to Keith's music with nothing but enthusiasm, and positivity. They proved it later and bought a bunch of merch. That is always a great sign. The next show was the next day in Mill Valley, CA at Sweetwaters. Only a 3 and a half hour ride. No problem! Plus, we had some good friends who let us land at their place for a few days.
