I freely altered the source material when I felt it would help the composition but I didn't need to do very much of this. Most of the opening and closing sections were algorithmically derived. The background horn parts during the duets and trio sections were written by ear keeping the algorithmically generated material in mind. I also want to commend the soloists for remaining true to the spirit of the piece in their improvised parts. I call the piece Post Zappa Impressionist. There are definite jazz influences but I think "Sympatico" is more heavily influenced by the 20th Century impressionists and by the work of Frank Zappa. I don't think the piece could have been presented without the help of Dr. Ken Carroll, Director of Jazz Studies at ASU. His 11:00 Small Group provided most of the musicians and the rehearsal time. He rehearsed the group, singing them through it. When I first showed him the piece he immediately got it and I can't thank him enough for his help. Thanks also to Dr. Daniel Tacke, Mr. Craig Collison, and Dr. Don Bowyer for their help with this composition. Instrumentation for "Sympatico" is a small jazz group plus additional instruments.
