Blaise Bailey Finnegan III *Includes a performance by Carla Bozulich NOTES: This was my 8th time seeing Godspeed since their reformation back in 2010. I try to never miss them when they come around (2016 not withstanding - big regret of mine). And like the previous 7 performances, I walk away almost speechless and blown away by the shear magnitude of what I just saw/heard. A wave of beautifully orchestrated noise, that's the best way I can describe it. I brought my "back up" recorder with for this show, the Roland R-07, rather than my workhorse Sony PCM-M10, give the Roland is a little more low profile, and I figured it'd be easier to sneak in (given I had no idea how security would be at this show). Well needless to say, getting the gear in was a piece of cake, thankfully. I decided to record the opener, Patrick Shiroishi, and by the time he was finished, I looked at my recorder (after just half an hour of recording) and the battery had dropped from 100% to 50% power remaining! I started thinking at this rate there was no way in hell the recorder's AA batteries were going to last all of Godspeed's set, not at this rate and I didn't have a backup pair. So I turned off the bluetooth feature (which allows you to control the levels from your phone's app) and then thought if I should record at a lower-res bitrate, but this isn't 1990 anymore and the hell if I wasn't going to record in 24 bit. So I figured, I'll just run the recording, and hope for the best. Well the whole show, I was a little stressed out and worried about my recorder dying. So much in fact, I couldn't even bring myself to look down at it and see if it was still going or not. About halfway into the set I do though, and holy shit the red light is still on and it's still going, no way! It's gotta quit any second I think, and I turn my attention away from it again. After "Cliff", a beautiful new song, I look down again and it's still red! I don't know if I'm going to jinx it or not, I'm afraid to look at the battery meter. With "BBF3" starting, I turn my mind off it and onto one of my favorite GY!BE songs thinking it had a nice run and got almost the whole show, and that's that. Well the band members start to leave the stage and people are clapping and the wall of noise is really starting to hit and I look down and it's still going! I'm amazed, almost brought to tears of joy, the fucking recorder made it through with a dying battery and captured the whole damn performance. It was the little engine that could and fucking did! O' Liberty and O' Burning Earth, thank fucking ye!!! As for the show, again, I was absolutely floored. The venue was pretty cool (first time there as I mentioned earlier), though it felt weird to see them in a seated venue. All the previous 7 times, I was standing (sometimes right at the front of the stage). I had to fight some urges to want to stand to absorb everything that was hitting me from the stage. I think it's a better experience standing personally, sitting down felt a little fucking weird, I just have to admit it. But in the end, it's God's Pee, and who am I to complain?
