Negative One opened the show tonight with some cool funky rhythms and rhymes and I wish I would have gotten there a bit earlier to see some more of it. Spinning Around made for a good GJ opener – a solid way to ease into the evening. The Squirms II was really tight and rocked out nicely. It was great to hear Flow again, and I'm not the only one who mentioned that they'd like to see more of this one in the rotation. Next up came a newer song previously noted as Summertime, but it sounds like it's going to be called Spider. It's a bit dark and mysterious, and I'm looking forward to seeing this one evolve. Cheat is always a lot of fun, and it had me hoping for some Drama later on but that never quite materialized. Then we came to our first debut of the night – a song that Royce wrote for Scotty to sing called Sunday Afternoon Martini. It got some mixed reviews from the crowd but was very much appreciated – given some time I think this one could turn into something solid (I liked the lyrics a bunch, myself). To finish out the first set we got a real treat – Scott Allen, the sound guy, came down and played some bass and sang Space Oddity! He's been doing sound at the Cabooze since the dawn of time, and for the last 4+ years he's been taking great care of GJ, so it was awesome to see him get up and have some fun on that stage. During one of the verses, he sang `Check ignition and may God Johnson be with you.' The second set was probably the highlight, starting off with a hot and funky Flippy Floppy that set up a super cool Long Past Gone. Here we got our second debut of the night – a slower reggae number called Come Home. This one is another Tim Carrow original and I'm sure it will get some time in the rotation as well. Two Person Chair came out to play after that, and segued into a smooth Naïve Melody that really jammed out. I could be wrong here, but I think the TPC went unfinished as well. One of the real treats was Who Am I, always a favorite with that big crunchy rock jam section in the middle. Lonely Girl came up next, and this one was all Jimmy. He had switched to his fretless Pedulla bass for the second set, and when he started his solo it became obvious why. That thing just sounds so sweet when he works it and slides around – awesome! G Thing closed out the second set with some more classic GJ fun. It was awfully close to 1:30 at this point and I thought we were done for the night, but they came back for an encore that knocked my socks off. Electric Shoes was the call, and it was dripping with funk right from the start. The jam section in this one really took off and I was a bit surprised to hear it actually go back into Shoes so smoothly. It really was one of those `wow' moments that you tend to remember. They wrapped it all up at about 1:38 and, as always, sent everyone home with a smile. There's no GJ this weekend, so rest up and be ready for next week's throwdown before 10KLF! It's gonna be a great time, so make your plans and bring your Rock Helmets! I'm planning on doing a special Rasta Burn for the show next week – a one disc wonder from our friend Cliff and his kick-ass taping rig. I'll only have a limited number on Wednesday, but I'll have a pile of `em for the crowd at 10KLF. Make sure you grab one for the collection at one of these shows – they're both gonna be hot! - Rasta
