It was a beautiful day to spend working in the yard or going to the lake, or maybe even out to the Zoo where the usually serene Weesner Amphitheater hosts bird shows during the day. Tonight the crowd would be just a little bit different from mom and dad and 2.3 kids… Yonder played one heck of a show full of rarities, debuts, classics and covers. Highlights from their set included Left Me In A Hole, Girlfriend Is Better (a hint for later?), No Expectations and Good Hearted Woman. But the real gem was in the encore with their cover of Split Lip Rayfield's Used To Call Me Baby – just amazing. After a couple of hours of badass bluegrass, nearly the entire crowd headed up Cedar to the Cabooze for the 10K Pre-party. And what a crowd it was! I'm used to seeing Wednesday GJ crowds, and bigger ones for the Saturday shows, but tonight was just packed. After a rocking set by Gypsyfoot, things got started with Timmy tearing into The Doctor. This one always makes a solid opener, and set up a fun Two Person Chair featuring Kevin on the sax. TPC jammed out pretty good, but really just hinted at what was coming up. Theme From The Bottom is usually good for the whole extended jam thing, but Triscuit was really where that became prevalent in the first set. All three sections were on fire with some heavy duty bass lines and soaring guitar riffs. Jason grabbed his acoustic Taylor and Tom Collins joined the boys on stage to do David Bowie's Space Oddity, which I believe is a debut for GJ. Wow, that was a sweet one for a debut – very tight and with great vocals by Tom. Bob Molitor came up to play some drums for Sweet Emotion to close out the first set with a bang. The second set kicked things off with a hot Lonely Girl with Tim sounding smooth and solid on the vocals. Long Past Gone has really turned into a favorite of mine with the meaningful lyrics, and tonight was a keeper for sure. But after that is when things went from wild to crazy and then to wild and crazy – the guest we'd all been hearing about came up to play some funk. Jeff Austin's mandolin wasn't too easy to hear in all of the hoo-ha excitement, but it certainly added something new to the sound. Early reports indicate that the recordings picked up more of his mando, and I'm really looking forward to hearing those recordings as soon as they're available. Yonder had dropped a little Heads into their set at the Zoo, so I was thrilled to hear some more when Jeff sat in. The rumor mill at the Zoo had Half Past One high on the list, but we got to hear something so much funkier in Electric Shoes. I really doubt Jeff had ever even heard the song before, but that certainly didn't stop anyone from jamming the hell out of it. It really looked like he was having a lot of fun sharing the stage with the GJ crew, and that was reflected in the music. Life During Wartime had Jimmy laying it down and Scotty lighting it up as they kept the funk thing rolling. I've really liked hearing GDTRFB since Japan, and I hope it doesn't drop out of the rotation too quickly. The segue into Fame was one to remember, and it looked like they were just having a blast on stage as they jammed it right into some Squirms to close it out. It's been said before, and I'm gonna say it again – we're some of the luckiest music fans around to have a scene like we do. To have a weekly rock show of this caliber is incredible, and to have so many great musicians around for collaborations is simply amazing. I really can't say enough to thank the GJ guys and the Cabooze for everything that they've helped to develop in the last few years and I'll leave it at that with a great big THANK YOU!!! - Rasta
