Out In California Flying -M- Notes: Thanks to Rick for capturing this fantastic performance but his recording had extremely low levels and it was necessary to increase everything by 30dB. That makes the quieter parts between songs recorded in the range of -70dB so there was a fair amount of system noise present when it was brought up. Har-Bal was used to correct the frequency balance which was very mid-range heavy and that uncovered even more hiss. An inverting noise filter was used to reduce this noise although there should be enough remaining to sound natural without being overwhelming. Being an acoustic performance any small noise was a distraction and a million little noises were removed (well an awful lot anyhow). A really fantastic performance made it worth the time and effort to get this to sound as good as I could. enjoy -M- *********** Rick's Notes: Yeah, the Edirol was in the process of dying for that show; it had a lot of miles on it, had served me well, but was pretty much done by then.  One of the final shows I used it for, because it was all I had at the time. Been a lot of years since then, but I believe Dave boosted the levels of the entire recording before kind of moth balling it and basically misplacing or losing it somewhere deep in what has to be a vast accumulation of never heard since recordings.  The show was not in Solvang, but at the Maverick Saloon in Santa Ynez, part of the long running (since 2003) "Tales From the Tavern" concert series. Though I've not heard any of it since about a week or two after it took place (and then, only a very brief segment of my recording), my memory of the show was that it was one of my favorite ever Dave Alvin performances, out of many dozens; far too many to count.  I really can't recall if Dave got photos of the show, but I'd guess yes. Unfortunately, I wouldn't hold out much hope on him being able to locate them, but no harm in asking. Please pass along my thanks again to Mike for working on this one; to my memory, it was clearly a very problematic, but still worth salvaging, recording of a pretty fine performance. *********** OldNeumanntapr Notes: My work on this one was minimal. I facilitated the transfer of Rick's master to Flying M for post processing, (something he does VERY WELL by the way), and also split the tracks, converted to FLAC, and tagged the files. I have recorded in the Maverick Saloon before and it's a VERY small room! It is comparable in size to McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, so it is very small and intimate.  Do NOT Convert To MP3. Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. ;)
