Moonlight Serenade                     [04:32.683]                                     Total: [57:18.537] Source/Recording notes: These tracks were shared with me by a source close to the band in the spring of 1997. They came on two separate tapes, one dated February and March of that year, and one undated. The labels mark them as "rough cuts", but they sound very close to the final released versions. The only exception is Moonlight Serenade, which is just John and his guitar on a tune he had only ever played at two of his solo shows. This was added as a bonus song, and its provenance is unknown. Song notes: Except for the final track, all of these songs eventually saw an official release. Eight ended up on Straight On Till Morning, while Diner was a bonus track on the Canadian Rose maxi single. Didn't Mean To Wake Up wound up as the B-side on an exclusive fan club sampler that also featured Carolina Blues, and later made it onto disc 2 of the "25" compilation in 2012 The disparities between these versions and the album versions are fairly slight; all of the instrumentation is the same (strings on Yours, keys on several songs, backing vocals on Psycho Joe and Make My Way) but there are subtle differences. There are count-offs before a few songs; the swirling intro to Great Big World is longer than on the album, and there's a similar outro that isn't on the album. There's more reverb on the kick drum intro to Business As Usual; the backing vocals are lower and kick in earlier on Psycho Joe; and the keys and harmonica come in much earlier on Make My Way. These are renditions that have likely already been through the full recording process, and are now in the mix/overdub stage prior to release.
