Review by Paul R. (aka EstimatedProf): In marked contrast to Friday, the skies today were overcast, with low cloud  cover, but happily no rain. By nightfall, the air was refreshingly cool,  with relatively low humidity (in spite of all the rain we got yesterday).  By mid June, summer is normally heating up big time in these parts, and the  reprieve is welcome. Sunday is supposed to be fine, and so the folks who  catch Donna at Kure Beach should have a pleasant day for an outdoor show. Some quick hits from this evening’s performance:  “This Mystery†was an effective opener. “Funky Side†was as mellow as I  have heard it. The band just crushed “Forty Days and Forty Nights,†and  with “Swing that Thing†the Donna machine was fully powered up. I loved  Jeb’s poignant guitar solo in “Each and Every Direction.â€Â Mollie Farr did  some lovely work in her accompaniment of Tara on “Motor,†and Chris was a  strong and solid vocal presence in “If You Like Drinking.â€Â Tatum and Ralph  in our pod suggested that a fitting but more compendious working title for  this song should be simply “Just Like Me.â€Â Point taken. “Revelation Two-Step† segued into “I Just Don’t Wanna Be Lonely,†which flips the familiar script,  according to which, say, a Keith Frank cover segues into “Revelation  Two-Step.â€Â Perhaps that explains the rough transition between the two songs.  I was perplexed by the cacophonic instrumental lead-in to “The Love You  Left Behind.â€Â Nonetheless, I want to reiterate what I wrote in my last  review: I could listen to this song again . . . and again. It’s a brilliant  composition. “Conscious Evolution†was one of the best I’ve heard.  Jeb’s thoughtful, introspective guitar work over the drone of fiddle,  percussion, organ, and bass created a sonic highway, a space in which I  could dwell a good long while. Unfortunately, a tuning peg on Tara’s fiddle broke before the duet encore,  which required some attention and posed an unwelcome distraction.  Tara forgot the lyrics to “I Believe,†which necessitated a reboot. But  not to worry. As my daughter would say (based on her experience as a  harpist): “It happens.†All in all, a fine show and beautiful experience. As Jeb said, “We’re  getting back into it.â€Â True that, for both band and Herd. https://www.donnathebuffalo.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo49heXJpe0 https://shakorihillsgrassroots.org
