Tara Nevins - "See ya at Virginia Key, February 20th" -Review by Paul R. (EstimatedProf): We were in Tallahassee this past weekend to visit family and celebrate Anne's birthday. By happy coincidence, Donna the Buffalo was the headliner at a fundraising event on the lawn of the Goodwood Museum and Gardens, which is the site of the Goodwood Plantation. There is a North Carolina connection in the history of this former cotton plantation, as the family that originally owned the property hailed from Lenoir County. It is quite a beautiful spread, with live oaks dripping in Spanish moss hanging over the lawn. The metal barriers separating the crowd from the stage (by several feet) and dividing the lawn longitudinally created a certain dissonance, given the beauty of the setting and the gentleness of the crowd. Nonetheless, a most pleasant venue at which to hear music outdoors on a chilly Friday evening. Donna's show was the prefect first-time live-show experience for two good people (my in-laws) who after years of hearing about the band from their niece and her father, have finally relented and become assimilated into the Borg. We found the assembled Florida Herd a fun bunch to hang with (special thanks to Cap'n Hook for treating me to a beer!), and Anne, her brother, and her sister-in-law enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Musical highlights for me were the third microphone on stage for Kyle, which accented his backing vocals very nicely (the vocal harmonies are much clearer now) and the new Jeb song, which has a cool "heartland rock" groove. The opening guitar riff has "Fender" written all over it, reminding me a little of a John Hiatt song. I took a stab at a title, from a recurring lyric, but I may have even that wrong. The song has evidently been played a couple times before, and I stand open to correction, as always. Hope we'll hear this one lots in the future. During band introductions in "Hot Tamale Baby," Jeb noted that Mark Raudabaugh is an alumnus of Florida State University -- "former reserve point guard and middle linebacker" :-) Never For Sale. Please support artists that allow taping by buying merchandise & attending shows.
