(EstimatedProf): Well, back to Virginia this weekend for another Donna show. Anne and I enjoyed a pleasant drive from Durham (NC) -- NC 86 through Hillsborough to Danville, VA, US 58 across the southern tier of Virginia and ascending into the mountains from Stuart, VA (spectacular view at Lovers' Leap), and then to the Blue Ridge Parkway, off of which the venue is situated. Some rather old stretches of highway on this route, which allow one to see more "local color" than the Interstates do. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a wonderful thing in itself, as long as one isn't in a hurry, although we were not on it all that long. I think the Parkway is one of my favorite experiences of western NC and Virginia. We are at the Hotel Floyd as a write this -- a cool little hotel in a cool little town. The day was drop-dead gorgeous -- about 72 degrees, no humidity, clear blue skies, with billowy clouds. Jeb commented that this was the finest weather that he had experienced in this neck of the woods, and one could hardly agree more. Ordinarily, it can still be quite hot and humid in mid September. It has cooled down dramatically this evening and is supposed to be in the 40s overnight. I'm quite OK with this. The festival itself was held on the Nancy Morrisette Field, which is about a half mile down the road from the winery. The field is an enormous piece of ground that was once the main parking lot for FloydFest. (I am told that FloydFest no longer leases it, though I do not know the reason why.) Upsides: Tons of parking, easy entry/exit, mellow staff. Downsides: no shade (except on the far peripheries, where the forest meets the field), long lines at concessions, and too few portable toilets. The festival itself was (obviously) themed around wine. Ticketholders received a souvenir glass with the Chateau Morrisette logo and a wristband with pink dots, which were marked for each glass of wine purchased (four check marks for a bottle), with a limit of six. The idea was to impose some constraints on alcohol consumption, which, we were told, has been heavy in years past. Anne and I tried the Chateau Morrisette's Riesling, which was OK as long as one isn't too discriminating and if one keeps in mind that this is a region that is known for tobacco, not viticulture. (Evidently, the grapes are not grown on site but are brought in from other parts of Virginia.) Jeb speculated that there must be a robust secondary market for wristbands that had not reached quota, and someone suggested that I offer him my unused one for auction from the stage. Competitive barbeque was the other nonmusical motif of the event. This wasn't quite like the "Meatfest" (or whatever it was called) at which Donna played near Asheville some years back. Strangely, the barbeque emporia were not yet permitted to serve when we arrived, which was around lunchtime. The logic behind the business model eludes me. The reason for the set break was to announce awards in various categories. I always enjoy it when Jeb indulges in cultural criticism, for he is a keen observer. Among its aficionados, barbeque (like chili, I would add) does seem to stir impulses to determine the best in show. Jeb's advice to those who did not win: Keep trying As for the Donna show (you were wondering when I would get to that): Against the backdrop of pretty scenery, perfect weather, and many dear friends, Donna's performance was one of the most fun shows I have attended in a long time (which is saying a lot). Crystallization of the proper vibe was almost immediate, with "Positive Friction" as an interesting opener. All of the indicia for progression into a hot show were present: David, Kyle, Mark smiling and singing along; Jeb and Tara seemingly quite satisfied with the present realization of what they started so many years ago; Eddie Greenstein dancing side-stage; young children on stage, wholly captivated and infected by the music (mentally insert some wistful reminisces here), and the general sense of connectedness among gentle people that I have sought to articulate over the years and can never seem to. Long-time Donna fans Holly and Carleton became engaged upon the conclusion of "Silverlined," which drew warm congratulations from the stage and their friends. They are a lovely couple to whom the reviewer, too, adds his own heartfelt best wishes. Kyle and David told the reviewer that there is something to be said for set break, during which both band and audience can regroup and tje carry on with new energy. Others may or may not agree, but I do see their point. After a very cool jam had regathered the Herd, the second set got off in a no less interesting way with "No Place at the Right Time," which was followed by a stunning (and moving) "LLMM." With "Cornbread" -> "Revelation Two-Step," the Donna machine had fully powered up again. After a long tease and the interpolation of a fine "Nothing Really" by Tara and accompanied by Mark (this treat while Jeb changed a guitar string), Jeb delivered on a promise implicit in the tease, viz. the lovely "Need You More and More." "Ancient Arms" was perfect in placement, execution, and crowd participation, as was "The Ones You Love" for that matter. "Times Like These" is a very sweet composition. Kudos to Eddie for keeping the "bachleorette party" (I assume that's who they were) that stormed the stage during "Part-Time Lover" separated from the performers and equipment. OK, with logorhea setting in, I'd better log out now. Paul R. (EstimatedProf) Never For Sale. Please support artists that allow taping by buying merchandise & attending shows.
