Carry the Zero Run Time: 01:33:36 This show was a lot fun, but even before it started I had an interesting experience. My wife and I got to the venue right after doors had opened, and went straight to the merch booth. There was another couple waiting there, who told us nobody had showed up to ring up people yet. There were these neat mini-notebooks signed by Doug that looked to be pretty limited, so we waited maybe 20 minutes before my wife left to get us a spot while I kept waiting. Finally, about 45 minutes later, Doug himself and a woman showed up to ring up merch sales. The woman mentioned to Doug that they needed to get someone from the venue to move a bunch of extra boxes they had back to the tour bus, but Doug insisted he do it himself, and then of course I and a few other people waiting to get merch volunteered to help, which he accepted. After we brought all the stuff out, Doug returned to the merch stand and started signing the copies of the new album that they were selling. Anyway, it was just a cool experience for me and I'm pretty sure Doug is one of the most friendly, humble musicians out there. The show itself was amazing. This was my first time seeing them since they cut down to being a three-piece again, and I was worried I would really be missing those 2 other guitars, but Doug, Teresa, and Melanie had no trouble filling out the songs. The rhythm section was on point and also just looked like they were having a lot of fun playing with Doug. I think the Scott Plouf/Brett Netson/Brett Nelson/Jim Roth lineup will always be my favorite, but the current lineup proves that Doug IS Built to Spill and kills it with whoever he plays with. This was my first time recording with external mics, and I'm really happy with how it came out. When testing the CA-14s after I got them, I noticed the right channel is touchy and cuts out sometimes, which I haven't figured out the cause of, so I've been hesitant to use them. Luckily, they worked great for the most part during the show, but you will notice a momentary cutout at the very beginning of "Big Dipper." The right mic cut out entirely, so I copied over the left channel for that bit, but there's still a noticeable, yet brief, reduction in overall volume there. Other than that, this recording sounds great.
