Title
Built to Spill Live at Crescent Ballroom on 2019-11-16
description
As mentioned in my previous write up and alternate source for this show, I recorded two versions: a recording ripped right from the soundboard on my Sony PCM-M10, and this one here, which is my standard "audience" recording using my Sound Professionals (aka Audio Technica) mics and my "backup recorder", the Roland R-07. Stacie and I got right front and dead center of the stage. This is both good and bad of course, for an audience recording. Great, because I had one the most intense and best spots in the house (I could almost brush Doug's beard if I had wanted), but bad because we generally aren't in the best line with the speakers to get the best sound (for both our ears and my mics). As you'll notice on the recording, it's loud and clear (no problem with that) but the vocal mix is sadly missing or so washed out and quiet, that you can't even hear Doug in some instances, compared to the soundboard mix that I also recorded. We're not sure exactly what it was...was it because of our spot that the vocals sounded quiet and almost non-existent? Or was it also due to how the sound guys (*cough cough*) were mixing the show for the venue? Larry was saying he was struggling with it all night, he said there was shit bouncing off the walls and totally throwing him off. Maybe so? Stacie suggested that maybe Larry was just fucking drunk? Haha, she's probably right as well. In any case, you can hear the vocals on the soundboard mix a lot better, so if that's your thing, then download that. But if you want something with a little clearer and heavier sound mixed in with your usual audience chatter and clapping, then get this. Or better yet, if you're some audio genius (I don't claim to be), download both and make a "matrix" recording of the two. I don't mind. I also have to say, this was my 4th time seeing Built to Spill, and I feel every time I do see them they have new members in the band. This time they had a younger duo on backing guitar and drums (what happened to Steve?) who seemed a little green (the guitarist kept losing/dropping his gear/clips during songs) but still played well. Doug, who Stacie mentioned must be a total introvert and somewhat shy and anxiety laiden due to his super short fingernails that he apparently bites (yes we were that close to Doug that Stacie could concentrate on and point out those facts) and his habit of closing his eyes for the majority of the show, led the band well through "Keep It Like A Secret" and other various songs (including an Elton John cover of "Benny and the Jets"). Again though, "Else" is the standout track for me here, this night. Absolutely loved it, and this whole night in general. Not quite as much as I love you though Stacie, but close ;)
