Built to Spill Live at Crescent Ballroom on 2019-11-16
description
This is the 16-Bit file set (24-Bit has been previously uploaded already) You read that right, this is not an "audience" recording, but instead a recording straight from the soundboard! I have to, right off the bat, give big thanks to both Jared ("Aluche99") and Built to Spill's sound guy, Larry, for making this happen. I've recorded Built to Spill before, and Jared has been kind enough, having known my fandom for the band, to introduce me to various members and when I told him I was thinking of catching them on this latest tour, he brought up the possibility of recording straight from the soundboard, something I've never done in all my years of taping bands. Well when plans were finalized for the show, I remembered Jared's offer and got put in touch with Larry, the band's sound guy. He then was kind enough to work with the house sound guy in setting up an XLR out on the main soundboard to plug my little recorder into (thanks again to Jared for pointing me towards what correct cable to buy). So I flew into Phoenix, after having just been there for a week on vacation (I was becoming very familiar with Sky Harbour by now) and after a little message/phone tag, we got to the venue early, met up with Larry and got all my gear plugged in. Of course I was worried how I was going to sneak in two recorders, plus extra cables. I had this whole scheme planned, if asked or hassled, about how I was meeting someone from the sound crew to drop off some equipment they had requested (which was semi true), but luck was on our side, for as we were waiting outside the venue to meet Larry, Stacie had the bright idea of just sitting at the tables inside the venue itself (but still outside). So we did, and by doing so, we beat the security guy at the front gate by about 2 minutes, meaning I was in (and past any security checks) with my gear. Voila! After some nachos and a Sonora dog (which was incredible), we met up with Larry and bullshitted for a while in the back of the venue while Sunbathe sound checked. We still had to get our actual wristbands though, given our tickets were on will call. So back out of the venue we went, and into line for will call. Once that was sorted, and we were given our wristbands, we were then told to go back outside of the venue and wait in line for doors. Well of course, I had dropped all my gear off at the soundboard with the sound guys, so I didn't need to worry about sneaking the gear back in, but we scoffed at having to go wait in line AGAIN after having been at the venues for hours it felt like, so we started to scheme (I hate to admit) by hanging out at the bar and just waiting for doors to "open", until I finally decided to just say fuck it and since no one was manning the "door", err, curtain, I suggested to Stacie to just walk past the curtain and go into the venue proper and just get our spot. So we did, with no problem whatsoever. We got front dead center. Things couldn't have worked out better. We had top notch spots, and all my gear was set up and recording from the soundboard. I also set up gear to record from my spot (Jared recommended I record an "audience" version too, so given I have two recorders and two sets of mics, I figured why not). As for the show, well I suppose I'll save that for the audience recording write up. But I do want to say one thing to finish this off, or well a few things. First off, "Else" is definitely the highlight of the show for me. I love that song. I've seen them perform before, for I've seen this album peformed in it's entirety before at FYF 2017. So it was nothing new, yet it was, given our spot and how close we were to Doug. It sounds so cliche, but being that close, I was really moved by the music and its energy. I loved every second of it. It's a little crazy, given I live in Los Angeles, that I would fly out to Phoenix to catch Built to Spill, given that they just played 3 shows at the Troubador (none of which I saw), but it was a chance to see another show with you Stacie, front and center, just how we like it at the club shows. I had barely been home for 24 hours before I had to re-pack and brave the airports and flights all over again to come see you again. But truth be told, despite the long days, or the hard days, or the down days, or the tough days...there's no one else I'd rather be at a show with. There's no other partner in crime I'd rather stand by, have my arm around, and sing along (err, well at least lip sync) with, than you. I'd brave 100 more airports and 100 more flights, from here to Timba-fucking-tu if I had to, to be with you and see another show. If you're there front row, I want to be there next to you. Always. Just wish and hope you know that, despite anything and everything.
